Basics of Juicing
Whether you’re juicing for health, weigh loss or
a combination of the two, juicing adds easily
assimilated nutrients and live enzymes to your diet.
Here are basics or getting the most from your juicing
program.
Try these veggies for weight loss and over all healthful
juicing:
Cucumbers – cleans your kidneys, lowers blood pressure
and benefits skin and hair. Cleansing is very important to
any weight loss program. Cucumber also helps cut the strong
taste of many other veggies. It is high in silica which is good for tendons, muscles and bones. For best results, use organic cucumbers which don’t require removing the peels.
Carrots – high in vitamin A, carrots are great for your eyesight, protect you from certain cancers and boost your immune system. Carrots are very sweet so adding celery or other veggies will help balance the taste.
In fact, carrots make a good base to add other, less palatable veggies into the mix. Pulp left over from juicing carrots makes a great salad. Add some raisins, grapes and a little lemon juice mixed with mayo.
Parsley – an extremely nutritious herb with a strong taste. It cleanses the urinary tract, blood and helps protect you from kidney and liver cancer. Also increases oxygen to your brain to boost memory. Mix only one part parsley to 10 parts of another
For juicing leafy vegetables such as spinach, a low speed, single auger juicer or twin gear juicer is best. If you use a centrifugal style juicer, wad up a handful of leafy green and run it through your juicer with something more solid, such as a celery stick. This will produce a better yield of juice.
Leafy greens are high in vitamin A, C, B1, B2, folic acid and manganese. Spinach is a great blood cleanser.
Beets – Beets are a powerful blood cleanser. So powerful, in fact, that you should not drink more than an ounce or so of straight beet juice as it will make you dizzy. Add some carrots, ginger and garlic for a nutritious immune booster.
Garlic – strengthens the heart and is a great anti-viral, anti-bacterial herb to boost the immune system. If garlic gives you heart burn, add some soothing ginger to improve digestion.
Helpful Hints for Juicing
Don’t combine fruits and vegetables. Instead mix all fruits together and all veggies together as these foods require different digestive processes. Exceptions are that lettuce and celery can be combined with either fruit or vegetables to make juice and apples mix well with vegetables and will sweeten the drink.
Drink your fresh juice alone, not with food. Drink it on an empty stomach and don't eat food for about one hour after consuming your juice. This is because the juice is able carry it's powerful nutrients through your system, directly into the blood stream. If your body is attempting to digest food at the same time, it defeats the purpose.
Just make enough juice for one serving at a time. Juice should be consumed as soon as possible as all-important live enzymes begin to deactivate soon after juicing.
Don't mix fruits and veggies in one juice mix except for:
- Lettuce and celery can be mixed with fruits and apples can be mixed with veggies.
This is because fruits and veggies require different digestive processes.
