Keep Memory Sharp, Prevent Heart Disease with Folic Acid
A recently released study shows that folic acid helps to sharpen mental function and protect the body from heart disease and stroke by reducing homocysteine levels. High levels of homocysteine, an amino acid, have been linked to heart disease and Alzheimer's.
In one study, participants between age 50 and 70 who took 800 mcg of folic acid daily for three years scored higher on cognitive function tests, Another study suggests that a combination of supplements and food sources is best to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.
Folic Acid has also been shown to reduce low frequency hearing loss and help protect against some forms of cancer. It also supports tissue growth and cell function in the body.
What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid is the synthetic form of the nutrient folate, a B vitamin which is also extremely important for pregnant women, or even women who are thinking of getting pregnant, deficiencies in folic acid can cause severe birth defects.
Folic Acid Supplements
Recommended dosage is at least 400 mcg of folic acid daily, which is usually provided in a good B-complex or multivitamin. It's best to take folic acid with a B-complex to keep the balance of folic acid and B-12. One study showed that those with high folic acid levels and low B-12 levels were at greater risk for cognitive problems and anemia.
Seniors and anyone over age 50 should be especially careful about getting both folic acid and B12 in their diet as many in this age group have a B12 deficiency. As we age, our bodies do not absorb nutrients as efficiently as they did when we were young so B12 deficiency is common.
Food Sources of Folic Acid
