How to Fix Cooking Mistakes to Create the Perfect Holiday Dinner
If you're new to cooking or even if you aren't, it's easy to fix cooking mistakes like weak, thin gravy or soupy mashed potatoes.
Fix Weak, Thin Gravy
Here is a quick fix for weak, thin gravy. Melt 1 tbs butter and mix with 1 tbs white flour. Blend until smooth, then whisk into your thin gravy and bring it to a boil. This will make it thicker in no time.
Fix Gravy that is Too Thick
This quick fix is pretty easy as well. Simply add more drippings or whatever liquid you are using, like canned chicken broth. Even a little water will work but broth adds flavoring. Just add liquid slowly and whisk to blend, while gravy boils. Don't add too much at a time. Add a little liquid, whisk and boil, then check to see if gravy is the desired consistency.
Fix for Soupy Mashed Potatoes
You can fix soupy mashed potatoes by adding more potatoes naturally but you might not have time to cook them. To firm up your potatoes, you can add dry, unseasoned bread crumbs, a little at a time, until the potatoes are the desired consistency.
Another quick potato fix is to add powdered or flaked potatoes to your cooked potatoes. Again, add slowly and a little at a time. You don't want to add too much because you'll end up with the opposite problem.
Quick Fix for Too Wet Stuffing
If you're stuffing comes out too wet and sticky, here's a quick fix. Spread the stuffing out on a baking sheet in a thin layer. Put it back into the oven and continue baking until it's as dry as you'd like it. Check frequently so it doesn't bake too much. If you have to put it in the pan in a fairly thick layer, remove it from the oven and toss it a couple times so it cooks all the way through.
