MSG Allergy - Foods with MSG
Foods with MSG

Do you suffer from MSG sensitivity? Whether you are aware of it or not, many of the health problems we tend to live with and accept in our lives - fibromyalgia, headaches, irritable bowel or colitis, insomnia, chronic post nasal drip, chronic fatigue - can possibly be traced to MSG allergy.

MSG in just about every processed or fast food you buy. Although the FDA says MSG is "generally recognized as safe", is it safe in the tremendous quantities which the average American consumes?

What is MSG?

MSG, or Monosodium glutamate, is a flavor enhansor commonly used in Asian foods and you may recognize it because whether or not your favorite Chinese food restaurant uses MSG or not has become an issue. However, Chinese restaurants are not the only place you will find foods with MSG anymore.

If you want a real shock, print out this list and take it to the grocery store with you. Check ingredient labels to see if the products you buy contain these MSG ingredients. Even supposedly "organic" options contain many of these ingredients.

One rule of thumb is, the saltier or more processed a food is, the more likely it is that it's an MSG containing food. Lunchmeats, snacks, anything in a box or package, or anything your order such as fast food (KFC is one of the worst offenders) is an MSG food.

Check the ingredient list for these MSG additives. One question to ask is, if MSG is safe, why do companies disguise the names for it?

Foods Additives that always contain MSG:

  • Monosodium Glutamate
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
  • Hydrolyzed Protein
  • Hydrolyzed Plant Protein
  • Plant Protein Extract
  • Sodium Caseinate
  • Calcium Caseinate
  • Yeast Extract
  • Textured Protein
  • Autolyzed Yeast
  • Hydrolyzed Oat Flour

These Additive Ingredients frequently contain MSG:

  • Malt extract
  • Malt Flavoring

As you can see, it's hard to avoid MSG. If you go to your favorite restaurant and ask which foods have MSG, they may tell you they don't use it. But - do they use any of the above ingredients? Most people are unaware of just where MSG hides in the food we eat.

Foods with No MSG

Once you've taken a trip to the store to find Foods with MSG, you probably want to know which foods have no MSG:

  • Fruits and Veggies - preferably organic
  • Grass fed meat with no antibiotics or additives
  • Foods which don't list any of the above as additives. For instance, if you buy a bag of almonds, make sure the ingredients say only "almonds."

Remember, just because a food says "no MSG" doesn't mean it doesn't contain an MSG allergy causing ingredients. Check the label for any of the above ingredients.
