Natural Stroke Prevention with Green and Black Tea

Baby boomers should be drinking green tea. A new UCLA study suggests drinking more green tea and black tea can drastically reduce the chances of having a stroke and the more tea you drink, the more stroke prevention you get.Until now, scientists have found very few ways to prevent strokes so this finding is particularly exciting.

The study showed that drinking 3 cups of green or black tea per day can cut the risk of stroke by 21%. Drink 3 more cups per day and stroke prevention rises another 21%.

What is the magic ingredient in tea for stroke prevention? Experts think it may be due to the amino acid theanine in green and black tea. This ingredient is almost exclusively found in tea and is nearly 100% absorbed by the body when drinking tea. Another possibility is an antioxidant called antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate or ECGC, which is also found in tea.

Stroke prevention came only from drinking green or black tea, not herbal teas. If drinking green tea, the caffeine is about half what you'd get from a cup of coffee.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer and affects more than 700,000 people in the US annually. Worldwide strokes are the second leading cause of death. Strokes are also the leading cause of disability in the US.

Baby boomers are especially at risk due to age. Drinking just a few cups of tea per day can keep you from being one of those stroke statistics.
