Best Sunscreens are Organic and Broad Spectrum
New FDA Guidelines for Sunscreen
The question of what is the best sunscreen just got clearer, thanks to new FDA guidelines. Many have wondered why, when use of sunscreen is way up, cases of skin cancer are also almost epidemic? The answer is that, according to new standards, our sunscreens haven't been protecting us from harmful UVA rays which cause skin cancer.
Natural vs Organic Sunscreens
When choosing the best sunscreen, look for a label that says "broad spectrum" which will protect you from not only sunburn causing UVB rays, but cancer and wrinkle causing UVA rays.
Remember that "natural and "organic" on the sunscreen label are two different things.
Organic Sunscreen
To be truly organic, the sunscreen label must have the USDA seal which means it is made with 95-100% organic ingredients.
Some labels may also say "made by organic ingredients” and these must contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. This sunscreen might not display an USDA organic seal.
So the best sunscreens now will be broad spectrum and carry the USDA seal which says it is organic.
New Sunscreen Labeling
Sunscreens will now have to state if they protect from both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones which cause sunburn. The SPF factor is only based on UVB rays, not skin cancer causing UVA.
UVA rays are also the rays which cause wrinkles and aging of skin.
Sunscreen label change is that companies can no longer label their product as waterproof or sweatproof as these features have not been shown in testing to be effective.
What to Look for on Sunscreen Labels
Look for sunscreens marked "broad spectrum" which protects against both UVA and UVB and carry the USDA organic seal.
