For Healthy Croutons, Make your own with this easy Recipe
If you purchase your croutons in a store, they are most likely made with fat and butter as main ingredients. If they use partially-hydrogenated oils, then they also contain trans-fats, which clog your arteries and help you gain weight.
Here is a healthier version of the crouton:
Recipe Ingredients:
12 slices of whole grain bread - use up the heels of loaves of bread
4 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
2 tsp. parsley flakes
2 tsp. onion powder
2 tsp. garlic powder
(see below for other possible herbs and spices to make specialized croutons)
Crouton Recipe Directions
To Make these croutons, first preheat the oven to 300.
Cut each slice of bread into cubes in the size you prefer.
Put your lemon juice and olive oil into small bowls. Mix your other ingredients in another small bowl.
Dip each crouton in the olive oil but do not submerse it or get it soaked in oil, just slightly damp.
Next, dip lightly into lemon juice. From there roll the crouton in the dry ingredients until all is covered.
Place on a cookie sheet lightly sprayed with olive oil cooking spray. Dip each piece of bread in this way until all are covered and on the cookie sheet.
Bake in oven until golden brown - about 10-12 minutes or less. Remove them from the oven and place on a paper towel to soak up excess oil.
Allow to cool and use on your salad or soup.
