Choosing the Best Protein Bars

How to Read the Label

Protein bars come in many tasty and they are great for post exercise or quick energy snack. Protein is essential for weightloss, helping to build lean, strong muscle when you're losing or maintaining your weight, but how do you know which protein bar is the best and the most healthy?

How to you choose the best protein bar when the array of choices is overwhelming? All protein bars are not created equal when it comes to ingredients so here are some tips on what to look for:

1.  Check the sugar content - Each 4 grams of sugar equals one added teaspoon of sugar. Some protein bars contain up to 28 grams of sugar - or 70% of the total recommended allowance for a 2,000 calorie diet.

2.  Check the type of sugar in the protein bar - Look for refined sugars like corn syrup, sucrose, and others. These are just another word for sugar.

3.  Check the grams of protein - Look for at least 10 gms of protein in the bar.

4.  Check the type of protein - Look for whey protein, which absorbs quickly and even may help fight free radical damage in the body.

5.  Check the type of fats - Avoid hydrogenated oils like palm oil or any saturated fat.

6.  Check the Fiber content - Fiber fills you up and adding at least 16 grams of fiber to your daily diet can greatly aid weightloss. Look for at least 2 grams of fiber from healthy sources like whole grains like oats.
