See your doctor
It is always a good idea to begin with a physical so you know exactly where you are. What is your blood pressure, weight and cholesterol? Get your doctor's advice on what you need to work on.to improve your health.
Purchase a spiral notebook - Write down goals
Write down your specific goals. Writing “I want to be healthier.” isn’t very specific. Why do you want to be healthier? Do you want to lose weight? Do you need to get your blood pressure and/or cholesterol down? Perhaps you’d like to eat a more healthy diet? What specifically would you like to add or subtract from your diet? Be as clear as possible and list everything you want to accomplish.
What you can to do achieve your goal
Next make a list of things you can do to help you achieve your goal. The best way to accomplish lasting change is to begin slowly and build on your success. Here are some possibilities for your list:
- Spend time each morning going over your list of goals. Ask yourself "What can I do today to accomplish my goal?" Visualize yourself as a healthy, energetic person. This will help guide you to make healthy choices that day.
- Clean out your pantry. Get rid of unhealthy oils and snacks. Make room for the healthy foods you want to eat.
- Go shopping. Stock up on healthy foods and snacks. Come prepared with a list of foods you want to add to your diet.
- If your goal is to "eat better" begin by adding superfoods to your diet. Many studies suggest eating 5 times a day but in smaller amounts. Be sure to stalk up on healthy snacks. Keep fruits and veggies on hand.
- Join a class. Try your neighborhood YMCA or Rec Centers. Find a beginner's exercise class for something you haven't tried before. Every day that you go will help you feel successful. You will meet others who are also interested in health.
- Health is a fascinating subject. Go to your local book store and browse the magazines and books related to health. You don't have to spend a fortune on this. Used book stores often have a great selection. The Internet also has many great health sites Other healthy pages on this website
- Practice living each day mindfully. Rather than put off happiness for some future day think about the present moment-the only one you have really. What makes you happy in the present moment? a loving spouse, children, pets, your job? If you have nothing in your life to bring you feelings of happiness or sadness, then perhaps you should cultivate people or activities in your life that DO bring you joy.
- Pay attention to your thoughts during the day. A huge part of how healthy you are depends on how you think. Are you a positive person? Do you like your life? do you consider yourself happy? Being positive boosts you immune system and keeps you healthy.
- Try to always reach for more positive thoughts. If you get down and feeling bad about life, it won't help you achieve your goal. What thoughts would help you achieve your goal? Remember, YOU control your thoughts and feelings. No one else.
- Read some inspirational literature such as “Manifest Your Destiny” or “The Power of Intention” by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Read books by Dr. Andrew Weil on living a healthy lifestyle. Such books will help you change your thoughts about not only your weight but your life.
- Take up meditation or yoga to help you relax and think more positive thoughts.
Incorporate Healthy changes you can live with
Above all, don’t give up. Keep your picture of the person you want to be fresh in your mind’s eye. You may be surprised at how people and events begin appearing in your life to support your new direction in life.
Once you begin living in a more healthy way, you will feel more positive, energetic and very proud of what you have accomplished. Remember even one small change can lead to others so if you don't stick with every change you started with on your list, be proud of incorporating the ones you did stick with into your life.
